There is a popular misconception that soap increases surface tension of water. In fact, it does quite the opposite – reduces surface tension to about one third of the pure water surface tension. When soap film stretches the concentration of molecules on the surface decreases, increasing the surface tension. Thus, soap selectively strengthens weak portions of the bubble by not letting it stretch further. In addition, soap prevents evaporation of water, thus further prolonging bubble’s lifetime.

Surface tension is also responsible for spherical shape of a bubble. Tension forces form a sphere because sphere has the least surface area at given volume. This shape may be significantly distorted by air flows and thus by the very process of bubble blowing. However, if left floating in still air, a bubble will soon take a close to spherical shape.
